About Atlanta
Incorporated in 1847, this young city was burned down by the Union army in 1864, during the Civil War. That is even described in the celebrated "Gone with the Wind", but only in a few years time, the city amazingly managed to recover and became the state capital in 1868.
Known as the "Crown Jewel of the South", Atlanta hosted the Olympic Games in 1996 and built the Centennial Olympic Park for the event as well as many new sports venues. The huge Centennial Olympic Park occupies 21 acres of land and has 500.000 memorial bricks and flags that honour America. Underground Atlanta is another must-see for visitors to this dynamic city. This unique underground mall is covered by six city blocks and offers numerous shopping, entertainment and dining venues, turning it into a little underground town.
The city's Southern hospitality, combined with a diverse range of theatres, museums, restaurants and clubs makes any visit to Atlanta a truly memorable experience.
